5 Signs Your Students Are Using AI Inappropriately (And What to Do About It)

Sign #1: The Writing Sounds Like a Robot Wrote It (Because... Well...)

You're reading a student submission and encounter phrases like "delve into," "multifaceted," "plethora," or "in conclusion, it is evident that..." Nobody under 25 talks like this. Nobody over 25 talks like this either, unless they're AI.

The sentences are grammatically perfect but weirdly formal. There's zero personality. It reads like a Wikipedia article had a baby with a corporate press release.

  • Why it's happening:

Students are copying their assignment prompt into ChatGPT, hitting enter, and pasting whatever comes out directly into the submission box. No editing. No personalizing. No critical thinking involved whatsoever.

They're not trying to learn—they're trying to finish.

  • What it means:

Your students don't understand the difference between "AI as a tool" and "AI as a ghost writer." They think using AI means letting AI do 100% of the work. And honestly? Can you blame them? Nobody taught them otherwise.

Sign #2: Suddenly, Everyone's an Expert

  • What it looks like:

A student who's been getting C's all semester suddenly submits an A+ paper with complex arguments, sophisticated analysis, and citations they definitely didn't read. When you ask them to explain their thesis in office hours, they look at you like you're speaking Klingon.

  • Why it's happening:

AI is really good at sounding smart about topics it doesn't actually understand. And students who are stressed, overwhelmed, or behind on work will take that shortcut in a heartbeat—especially if they don't realize it's considered cheating.

Plot twist: many students genuinely don't think this is cheating. In their minds, using AI is like using a calculator or spell-check. They don't see the ethical line because we haven't drawn one clearly enough.

Also, AI confidently makes stuff up. It'll cite "Dr. Susan Martinez's 2019 study on climate patterns" that sounds totally legit... except Dr. Susan Martinez doesn't exist and neither does that study.

  • What it means:

Your current assignment design might be unintentionally AI-friendly. If a question can be answered with a simple prompt, students will absolutely take that route. Not because they're lazy—because they're efficient. (And terrified of failure.)

Sign #4: Students Can't Explain Their Own Work

  • What it looks like:

You ask a student to walk you through their thought process, explain a key term from their essay, or expand on an argument they made. They freeze. Stumble. Give vague answers that contradict what they wrote.

It's like watching someone try to explain a movie they didn't actually watch—because, well, they didn't actually write it.

  • What it looks like:

You mention (even casually) that you're using AI detection software, and suddenly there's a wave of anxiety in the room. Students start asking nervous questions: "How accurate is it?" "What if it flags something by accident?" "Can it tell if I used AI for brainstorming?"

  • Why it's happening:

Students know they're using AI in ways they probably shouldn't. And they're terrified of getting caught—not because they're malicious cheaters, but because they genuinely don't know where the line is.

  • Learning proper citation and attribution (yes, you need to cite AI if you use it)

  • Knowing when AI helps and when it hurts (some tasks benefit from AI; others require human thinking)

  • Building skills AI can't replace (critical thinking, creativity, original analysis)

✅ Redesign Assignments to Be AI-Resistant

If your assignments can be completed with a single ChatGPT prompt, it's time for a redesign. Try:

  • Process-based assignments (show your work, submit drafts, explain your reasoning)

  • Personalized prompts (connect to students' own experiences or local contexts)

  • In-class components (presentations, discussions, peer review)
